The survival stories of the Pacific Islands began in the sea, with a strong food dependence based on fishing for centuries; in this sense, I call on the world to stop the dumping of garbage and nuclear waste in the Pacific Ocean, these become toxic and highly destructive to biodiversity and marine ecosystems, pollution and contamination that today is affecting us greatly, microplastics and the presence of hazardous chemicals.

The Pacific Ocean faces a serious threat from the accumulation of nuclear waste, microplastics, chemicals and millions of tons of other debris, which threaten the survival, health and food security of the Region.

The Pacific Region also faces a triple crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.

The Region needs to adopt sustainable blue economies while mitigating environmental impacts, especially the harmful effects of plastic, microplastics, chemicals and nuclear waste in the oceans.

A comprehensive management plan is required throughout the Pacific Region to protect, research, develop and restore species, generate data and devise a strategy for the conservation and sustainable management of marine ecosystems.

Ocean and biodiversity recommendations:

1. Take urgent measures for capacity building.

2. Implement international policies and restriction mechanisms to prevent marine pollution.

3. Protect and restore our ecosystems.

4. Impose sanctions on the dumping of common and nuclear waste into the ocean.

5. Promote sustainable fishing practices.

6. Preserve coastal and marine areas.

  • Educate and raise awareness about biodiversity management, protection, and restoration .

7. Enhance the economic benefits of sustainable use of marine resources .

    8. Allocate resources to thoroughly identify and monitor the status of biodiversity, with special attention to protected areas and other biodiversity conservation measures.

    9. Manage and implement economic incentives to safeguard biodiversity.

      10. Identify and recognize effective holistic measures, based on traditions, culture and ancestral knowledge.

      11. Concentrate efforts on protected areas and biological corridors that connect at ecosystem levels.

      12. Take actions to increase sustainable production practices, protecting biodiversity.

      13. Use science, technology and ancestral knowledge to design and implement the protocol that the ecosystem needs for its balance.

      14. Create instructional and practical platforms for conservation innovations and amplify learning.

        Thank you.
