Mana Rapa Nui Foundation

Let the Elders Stay Home

The first elder care community in Rapa Nui β€” where culture, dignity, and life remain rooted in the island.

There is no aged-care home in Rapa Nui.

When Elders require care, they are sent 3,700 km away to mainland Chile. Families are separated. Culture is interrupted.

The community calls this: te ngaro o te koro’uru β€” the disappearance of the Elders.

There is another way.

A House, Not a Hospital

A home rooted in Rapa Nui culture β€” where Elders live, play games and music, teach youngsters, enjoy physical and medical therapy, and heal within their community.

The Hare Paenga

The Hare Paenga β€” traditional Rapa Nui dwelling, perspective and plan view
A house like an overturned canoe. Each oval on the village plan is one of these elliptical, boat-shaped dwellings β€” a 21st-century interpretation of the prestige dwelling of classical Rapa Nui society.
