Los mo\u00e1i \u2014esas imponentes figuras de piedra que vigilan silenciosamente el Pac\u00edfico\u2014 han hecho famosa a Rapa Nui en todos los continentes. Millones de personas sue\u00f1an con visitarla. Los acad\u00e9micos han escrito miles de estudios sobre el pasado de la isla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Casi nadie escribe sobre lo que significa tener una discapacidad en Rapa Nui hoy en d\u00eda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soy miembro de la di\u00e1spora rapanui. Mi familia tiene profundas ra\u00edces en la isla: tierra, comunidad, memoria y un amor que se remonta a generaciones atr\u00e1s. No lo es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No existe ning\u00fan programa gubernamental de distribuci\u00f3n de sillas de ruedas. No hay centros de rehabilitaci\u00f3n. No hay trabajadores de salud comunitaria capacitados en la atenci\u00f3n a personas con discapacidad. No hay centros de pr\u00e9stamo de dispositivos de asistencia. El sistema nacional de salud chileno no brinda una atenci\u00f3n efectiva a los aproximadamente 7.750 residentes de la isla en lo que respecta a la discapacidad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Una persona que pierde su movilidad en Rapa Nui tiene dos opciones: depender enteramente de su familia o ser evacuada al Chile continental \u2014a m\u00e1s de 3.700 kil\u00f3metros de distancia\u2014, lo cual conlleva un enorme costo personal y econ\u00f3mico. La mayor\u00eda de las familias no pueden costear la evacuaci\u00f3n. La mayor\u00eda se queda. Hemos visto una extremidad prot\u00e9sica sostenida con cinta adhesiva. Hemos visto a personas mayores dependiendo de muletas desgastadas y bastones improvisados, arregl\u00e1ndoselas lo mejor que pueden. Vive discretamente, en hogares apartados del camino, en la determinaci\u00f3n cotidiana de personas que se niegan a ser definidas por aquello de lo que carecen. Son nuestros ancianos, nuestros vecinos, nuestra familia.
